Retired Brigadier General Michael C. McDaniel has been overseeing the FAST Start initiative since Mayor Karen Weaver announced it in February 2016. So far crews have replaced lead or galvanized service lines leading from the water main to the water meters of more than 2,100 homes. The goal is finish the job by replacing 6,000 service lines a year so that all the city’s lead-tainted service lines are replaced by 2020.
McDaniel currently is associate dean and Director of Homeland Security Law at Western Michigan University Cooley Law School in Lansing. He previously worked in the Michigan Attorney General’s Office from 1984 until 2003, when he was appointed Michigan’s first Homeland Security adviser by Gov. Jennifer Granholm. From August 2009 to January 2011, McDaniel was the deputy assistant secretary for homeland defense strategy, force planning and mission assurance at the U.S. Department of Defense.
