Joyce A. Thomas, CMP is the Development Director for the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) Michigan Office (Detroit). As Development Director, she will assist the Area Development Director in implementation of action plans, strategy, event management, fundraising, and take the lead on Detroit, and Flint campaigns. Prior to joining UNCF, Joyce was a Meeting Planner for W. K. Kellogg Foundation and has worked in various capacities as event planner, fundraiser for nonprofits, local and state government.
Joyce is also President and Managing Director of Very Special Event Consultant a full-service woman owned event management company. With more than 20 years of experience she has successfully designed and managed conference, meetings, special events, gala’s, fairs and sports events for corporate clients, and nonprofit organizations nationwide.
Joyce earned her B.A. in Business Management from Northwood University and is a Certified Meeting Professional (CMP). CMP is the highest designation you can earned in the hospitality industry from the Events Industry Council (Alexandria, VA). She also has an Associate’s degree from The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (Los Angeles, California) with a minor in Interior Design.
Joyce is a member of the National Coalition of Black Meeting Professional (NCBMP), Meeting Planners International (Michigan Chapter), the International Air Transport Association, and Grace Emmanuel Baptist Church.
Joyce married her high School sweet heart Lawrence E. Thomas and were married for 33 years before he died suddenly of a heart attack 7 years ago. They have one daughter Nicole who matriculated through the Flint School system and earned a Bachelor Degree from Eastern University and is a Registered Nurse at Beaumont Hospital (Royal Oak) and will complete her Nurse Practitioner Degree (Master) in a few short months.
