Herb Stephens is a Flint native who has lived all over the world, and today is a successful Silicon Valley software entrepreneur.
Born at Flint Osteopathic Hospital in 1965 while his parents owned and operated the ‘Airport Motel’ on Bristol Rd., Herb moved to Sault Ste. Marie at four and then back to Flint at attend high school at Flint Carman. Herb enrolled at University of Michigan – Flint as a junior in high school and studied mathematics there and at University of Michigan – Ann Arbor, before accepting a work/study program at Michigan State University and General Motors, where Herb worked at AC-Delco in Flint as a second-shift supervisor on the ‘mold-and-grind’ line making spark plugs.
While at MSU, Herb worked for the State of Michigan’s Treasury Department, Venture Capital division. Since leaving Michigan in 1989 to work for GE, Herb has lived and worked all over the world and has traveled to 41 countries.
Since 1993, Herb has lived in San Francisco working as a ‘software startup serial entrepreneur’, founding and building multiple Internet companies in industries including: financial services, healthcare and civic government, and taking one company public.
Today Herb is President of Democracy Earth Foundation, a non-profit developing Internet software solutions for governments big and small. The goal is to reduce costs and remove corruption from public elections and budgets utilizing open source software and decentralized architectures, enabled by blockchains.
Herb looks forward to sharing his experiences and to implementing such ideas for Flint to move out of the existing cycles working against the City and its residents.
